My IPAD fits nicely into the sleeve pocket now with the Apple Case.If I had purchased the netbook bag, that extra cushion would probably not allow me to put the IPAD with its case or any other case for that matter.In addition, my classic bag has a two features I am very happy with.The Cam buckle shoulder strap gives me enough space to cross the strap on the opposite shoulder and the new slash pocket on the front flap sold me.If you are looking for a well made, perfect bag for the IPAD look no further!!!

I have been searching for a pannier that would stay on, which seems to be a problem with some of the other less expensive panniers. This one does the trick.It has a dual hooking system - two coated metal hooks that go on the rack, and a bungee cord on the back that attaches down below to keep it from jumping off.I go over tracks twice a day and it has not come off.It has a metal insert that you can pop up to keep the bags shape when in use (it has an inner clip to keep it in place), then it folds up when not in use (again it has an adjustable clip to keep it closed). You can slide the bag back on the rack to keep your feet from hitting it.I have a Amsterdam cruiser and it works just fine.The only down side is that there isn't a top to close off the bag (hence the four star instead of five star rating).It has a removable shoulder strap, which I just put in the bag to keep it from getting caught. It seems sturdy and durable and has enough room for a grocery bag if you care to use one. It is easy to remove, but I keep my on just in case I need it, as it isn't in the way when it's folded up.I bought one just to make sure I liked it and I'm buying another.

Very straight forward, no frills. One big V-shaped compartment with one smaller outside pocket. I ride my bike to work 2-3 times a week, and one of these panniers carries all I need: my shoes (granted, I wear a women's size 7) my clothes and my breakfast. I carry my wallet, keys, etc in the outside pocket. I've not tested it in the rain, but it's very easy to put on and take off and carry into work. I've used both panniers to carry picnic items, lots of room, doesn't get in the way when I pedal. Great product, great price.

These panniers are stylish, low-priced, and the multiple pockets help organize things.They would be good for a commuter. However, I think they're poorly designed, even dangerous, for loaded touring where you have items like a tent or sleeping bag sitting between the panniers atop your rear rack. The problem is that there is nothing to prevent these items from pressing down on the panniers' quick release tab.One of my panniers fell off midway through my first ride.If a friend had been ridng behind me or if a car had been passing me, this could have been dangerous.In more than 30 years of using panniers, I had never had one fall off before. I will only use these panniers with them tied or bungied to the rack.I don't trust their attachment system when I am doing loaded touring with a tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad sitting lengthwise on the rear rack.I showed this design flaw to an engineer friend, who said, "whoever designed these panniers has obviously never done loaded touring."

I've been using mine for nearly ten months, commuting daily with reasonably heavy loads, and I've never had a problem. The backpack straps are strong for when I am not using the bike, and it has never fallen off or come loose while riding. It works great when it is raining,snowing and miserable out, including in subzero temperatures. My bike doesn't have a place to attach a traditional rack, and I've found keeping it as low as possible has helped with clearance issues.

Had a chance to get 2 when I purchased it locally, but at this price, I wanted to try out the one I purchased first... when I went back to get a 2nd one, it had sold out.

It has a laptop pocket (fits a 13" macbook/pro snugly), but a 15" laptop (ie, macbookpro) would fit snug in the main compartment.

The bag holds very well to our rear racks (the racks that come with our topanga kid bike seat), it just clicks in, and if you're paranoid you can tie down (though unnecessary).

The belt buckles can be a pain for quick access to the main compartment, but seem quite serviceable... we've used our bag for a year on and off (me for commuting occasionally, wife for shopping) and it's holding up fine.

When carried as a tote/handbag, it looks great, the handle requires the buckles to be secured, but I mainly use the shoulder strap and forget about buckles while I'm walking from the bike racks to my company gym.

One note: the way this bag is secured, you can't put the kids bike seat on at the same time.... wife and I have to switch off.

I get lots of questions from folks asking where I got this pannier, and I tell them about my local shop.

Thule 867 Tahoe Rooftop Cargo Bag Review

We bought the Thule Tahoe Rooftop Cargo Bag for a roadtrip from Texas to Florida.

1. The bag was easy to use, and the instructions were good.It attached right onto our roof rack with no probolem.I had read other reviews and knew to have safety pins (8 to be exact) to secure the excess strapping to the bag, or it will make noise while you're driving.

2. It rained on us part of the way down, but our luggage was inside plastic bags.The plastic bags did get wet, but our luggage was fine.I would say that the bag is weather resistant as claimed becasue there wasn't much water in the bag after the storm.

3. The bag produced drag, and it affected our gas mileage and gas was over $4.00 / gallon at the time.

4. Removing and putting on the bag at each of our stops wasn't a big deal.We only had 2 suit cases, and a toiletry bag in there - so it was a snap to get them out/in, and then the bag off/on.

The bottom line is that if you need extra space in your vehicle, don't have or want to spend the money on a hard top cargo carrier, and probably if you're not driving 1600 miles roun-trip (my opinion that this better for shorter trips) - then this bag is right for you.

Somebody was thinking.Wide screen PCs can't get into the padded inner pocket because the side zipper isn't long enough, but that's the only problem.Takes but a second to slap on the rear rack and attach the clips, and away you go.I carry the PC on one side with room to spare.The other side I use for camping gear and grub.When going farther than I can with the bike; it's just pull it off the rack, snap the bottom of the pockets together, pull out the padded shoulder straps, and in backpack mode keep on truckin'.
Picked mine up before the price jumped, but even at the new price it's a good value.

Ha, ha. All jokes aside, I was very pleased with this purchase. Fit with the included mounting hardware on the factory rack on my 2005 Mountaineer. Easy to install, very sturdy. I was worried, because lots of the skis we transport have racing bindings and they are mounted on plates. I thought maybe the bindings would scrape against the roof of the car when the skis were stacked onto it. But this rack gives nice clearance, even when mounted on factory crossbars. Everything about the bag is good (lightweight, roomy, shoulder strap) except that it does stay on the bike rack.It is fastened by velcro strips which are too short.

Documents that came with the bag stated it could only be returned in unused condition.It was in using the bag that I found it would not fasten securely, even falling off once.

So, I changed the fastening system.The fastening system consists of short velcro strips and plastic guides secured to short binding straps.First I cut off the velcro strips and the plastic guides.Then I extended the binding straps with purchased binding, and attached 3/4" side release buckles.The bag now secures firmly, and is easy to put on and off.

However, there are lots of other bags on the market that do not require such effort to make them work.

Used these panniers on a 7 day ride.They are easy to pack and mount on the rack.Their 65 liter capacity handled all the gear I needed.Had one massive rainstorm, and the rain covers kept everything dry.The only thing that keeps me from rating these bags at 5 stars is that one of the bags fell off after hitting a series of bumps.After that experience, I used some 16 guage wire to tie the two panniers together (weaving the wire through the top of the rack).No problems after that.I would definitly recommend these bags (just be sure to use wire or rope to ensure that they stay on the rack!)

Axiom Typhoon Panniers Review

I wanted to get new panniers that were waterproof and bigger than my current ones, but I couldn't afford the fancy Arkel or Ortlieb models. These Axioms are great -- very roomy and the closure appears to support the waterproof claim. The hardware seems rugged and makes for easy installation and removal from my rack. I used them on a 60-mile overnight bike camping trip and there were no problems. They held tight to the rack with no wiggle or slippage. It didn't rain on the trip, so I can't confirm the waterproof claim yet.

I do have only a couple minor complaints:
- They could benefit from a few more storage options. Although the main compartment is *really* roomy, it would be nice to have a couple interior pouches to help with organization. There is a waterproof zippered pocket on the outside of the flap that can hold papers or maps or other thin items. There's also a zippered mesh pocket on the inside of the flap. Aside from those, it would be nice to have a couple additional exterior pockets or pouches for extra water bottles or other small items that need to be accessible. A loop or other way to attach a light to the back of the pannier would also be a nice touch.
- The instructions are pretty minimal. I had trouble figuring out how the closure works and the instructions only included some *very* tiny photos that were too illegible to be of any help. I finally figured it out, though. :-)
- The panniers are so big that I had to really stretch the bungee cord attachment in order to move them far enough to the rear of my rack so that my heels didn't hit them. That comes with the large capacity, I guess.

Overall, these are great panniers. I got them through Amazon / Niagara for a much lower price than what's shown today, so you might want to wait for a sale if you're not in a hurry.

I bought this stand because it was the only one I saw that didn't contact the bike's frame, spokes, etc., just the rear tire.You simply back the bike into the wheel slots on the bottom of the stand, and the rear spring-loaded arm keeps the bike upright by holding the rear tire with tension.The arm folds down easily to make this stand highly portable.The only negative thing I can say is that the edges of the metal wheel slots where the tire sits can make a slight indentation on the tire, even if the bike sits for just a day or two.It's not a big deal, and it appears that the rubber rebounds so I don't think it would leave a permanent indentation on the tire anyway.I rectified this by putting a bit of black duct tape on the metal lip to soften it up some.Highly recommended.

Bought this a few weeks ago for my '97 Ninja 600.Fits fairly well, but the back does not make it all the way to the ground (about 6 inches short).I think this would be a problem with any sport bike.

Bottom line, it keeps the rain off and has bungees to hook across the bottom so the cover doesn't get blown off.Has a storage pouch sewn to the inside of the cover which is a nice touch because I'd probably lost it otherwise.

Would have given it 5 stars if the back was a few inches taller.

Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag Review

I've been using my medium timbuk2 messenger bag for the past 2 years. Frankly, I think large is way too big. Even medium is a bit much for my 5'3" frame. Let me give you an idea of how much a medium bag can hold: 2 thick textbooks, a 15" laptop in casing, lunch, portable mug/water bottle, gym clothes + sneakers. So in short, it's perfect for those who leave early in the morning and don't get home until the evening. It has enough various-sized pockets on the inside and outside of the bag to feed all my compulsive needs. It works also exceptionally well as a carry-on and overnight or weekend trips. The bag is certainly durable and stylish with an added bonus of having the option to customize the color blocks. I liked that about timbuk2 bags -- crumpler bags seemed a little boring. And to clarify, timbuk2 bags are waterproof in a sense that the contents of your bag will not get wet; but the bag will, because it is the inner lining of the bag that is waterproof, not the outer material. Once the bag dries, it's as good as new, but I now spray my bag with a water-repellent from time to time.

If you decide to buy a medium or large, definitely shell out a few more bucks for a padded strap, because while the strap is nice and wide, it provides zero cushioning for your shoulders.

Okay, this "fairing" looks cool on top of my Toyota Tacoma and it hides the roof rack.However, it does very little to cut down on wind noise.I was really surprised at how much noise it still allows.Instead of thumping the roof, the wind now whooshes loudly.If you don't have the music on, it takes some getting used to.Without the ski rack on top, it is easily stolen by unscrewing the bolts (although I don't know who would steal a 38" X 3.5" piece of plastic).It's amazing what we buy to make things look "cool".Thule also makes nice looking `fairings'.

I just used this carrier on a 1600-mile round trip from northern Illinois to North Carolina (on a 2005 Astro Van).On the return trip (September 14), we went through extreme hurricane force winds (aftermath from Hurricane Ike) of 75 MPH from all directions in Louisville, KY.The wind downed trees on the interstate, but the carrier held firmly and no rain entered despite an incredible amount of buffeting due to the winds.I was concerned that the sideways and up-and-down effects of severe buffeting might loosen the grips on the crossbar, but the grips were as tight when I arrived home as they were when I left home.I saw two top carriers that had separated from their vehicles and had been run over on I-65...that's how bad the wind was.

When I first got it it fit up well, but one of the saddles that sits on the cross rail broke.I called Thule customer service and they were very nice.They immediately sent four new saddles and said that I must have received one of their earlier units that had substandard saddles.They apparently discovered this recently and were very accommodating.I appreciate their fine customer service, although I am glad I had time to get the saddles before my trip.Suggest that you make certain that you have the most recent saddles.

I put this lightweight rack on a 700cm Specialized comfort bike with a medium frame size. The rack clears the rear tire nicely thanks to the extra hole on the side support strut. In order to achieve a level mounting, I had to fabricate an angled bracket (2" wide aluminum x 1/8" thick.) to extend to front of the rack because the supplied front mounting brackets are to short. Overall, I'm pleased with the result but be prepared for some extra work on some bikes.

I purchased the Thule Rooftop Cargo Box after seeing them on so many vehicles on my travels across the U.S..The 603 Ascent 1500 was selected as the size and shape fit my camping needs to a "T".Once I received it and opened the box I was skeptical as it is very light, but feeling confident with the numbers of them in use, I mounted it to my 2001 Subaru Outback.Wow! Easy and Quick!No brainer there!Then it was off to Washington State an over 2100 mile trip.
Well, I am back and only have enthusiastic phrase for this fabulous cargo box! High winds at 75 mph and rain didn't phase it one bit!As far as my gas mileage, I really think it increased!I get 25 mpg normally and I averaged just over 24 mpg!That includes going through the Rockies several times and the high wind on the nose driving!I don't believe I did that well without it. This is a Great Product and I am sure you will be pleased as well!Purchase it, you won't regret it!Amazon gave great service and shipping!

I just got this today and had it stuffed full after running errands on my bike.The bag was easy to take on and off while I did my shopping and held a ton of stuff!Even fully loaded, the bag was secure.I read reviews of other pannier bags that have popped off while riding over bumps- scary- but not this bag.It's good looking, light weight, waterproof, easy, and secure.The only bad part is that I only bought one.I will definitely be getting a second.

Basil Kavan II Rear Bag 17044 45L Beige Review

These bags are incredibly well made from durable canvas and leather. They're surprisingly heavy but the weight is only felt when you're lifting your bike upstairs (a downfall to living in an apartment with no bike storage!). I had a bit of trouble attaching the bags to my rack - possibly because I'm an idiot. They attach to the rack with leather buckles so these aren't intended to be removed - they're more of a permanent fixture on the bike. They're also quite large and at first, I thought they might be too large and heavy. Well, after a few weeks with the bags, I'm convinced that they were a great choice. They're large enough to hold my school books, laptop, groceries, and anything else that would otherwise be too awkward to carry on my back. On a school day, I put my empty messenger bag in one of the panniers and then transfer all of the loose stuff into my bag. I'm also way more likely to go on a bike picnic or to the farmers market now that I have ample room. I can't express how amazing it is to be free from lugging heavy stuff on my back! I was pretty skeptical about the bags being waterproof - I live in rainy Portland - but, I think there must be some sort of waterproof shield between the canvas layers that prevent rain from getting through - the inside of the bags stay dry! The leather is already becoming much more supple and is easier to buckle. My only concern is the bags being stolen. I do think they might actually be too awkward to bother with - since you'd actually have to get down and unbuckle a bunch of straps. Possibly not worth someone's time? Overall, these are great bags, functional and classy. They'll definitely last forever and are totally worth the investment. I would highly recommend these bags to someone who would like a more permanent hauling set-up on they're bike.

Thule Boxter Cargo Carrier Review

Ordered this in the blind off Thule's recommendation for my 2010 Volkswagen TDi Sportswagon and 2005 Honda Odyssey.The box was shipped via ground and arrived in great condition.I ordered the areo bars and feet for my new Sportwagon but have the sqaure bars on my Odyssey.The box fits both with easy and rides nicely on both vehicles.The nice feature that Thule did not, nor any of the websites that I used to conduct my research, play up how easy it is to put on, much less swap between two different vehicles.

On the bottom of the cargo box, there are sliding anchors that allow you to place the box on either type of bars.This was covered in the all of the videos and write ups I could find, but the interesting thing is that they slide to accommodate at a minimum of around 21" and a maximum 36" distance between the front and rear bars.So there is no need to have both vehicles setup the same or worry about having to reposition the feet.Once you have the box positioned, then you secure it to the bars by twisting the knobs inside the box.

Truly a well engineered piece of equipment like all the other systems and components I have purchased through Thule.I believe this box is well worth the money and am glad I went with this box over the Atlantis model.I certainly do recommend this box to others!

Thule Traverse Foot Pack Review

I'm a faithful Thule user.Last 4 cars all had Thule racks.All that changed with the latest Traverse 480 system.After debating the plus and minus of Yakima's Q system compared to the Thule 480, I decided I'd stick with Thule and see how it all worked out (despite being told by REI employees "You have to wonder about a rack that requires a 'fit kit' to make it work."

Turns out the pros were right.The fit kit (4 pieces of metal and some fitted rubber for $70!) never felt quite solid on my car.And maybe it was the nervousness about the fit kit, but when I tested the rack with two bikes I ended up driving around the block hearing noises.Metal straining.That was it.I called Thule, waited on hold for 40 minutes (you weekend sports enthusiasts will be excited to know that you can only call Tues-Fri) and was only told, "Yes, it has been tested.It fits."

I returned the racks and got the Yakima Q towers.I've never looked back.

Also, on the plus side for you Thule faithful, most recent Thule attachments (bike, kayak, ski) are designed so you can put them on a Yakima rack.Obviously Thule did this so they could sell their add-ons to Yakima customers, but the plus for me is I could get rid of my Thule 480 and still keep my bike trays.So don't think you need to stick with Thule just because you have a load of Thule attachments.

Goodbye, Thule.Was nice knowin' ya.

I have a pair of these panniers in "Petrol" which is a turquoise and green pattern. If you go to the Basil website, you can actually see the range of patterns that they offer - many of them are really cute - though there aren't many US businesses selling them.
The bags attach to a standard rear rack. There are four fabric belts that loop around and cinch on the side railings of your rack - two on each side. There are velcro loops on the inside (toward the wheel) that you can loop around the supports of the rack, just above your rear wheel axle. The bags close with two adjustable snap belts on each side. Another reviewer commented that the bags are not easy to remove - that is fairly accurate. If you are concerned about theft and want to easily be able to pop the bags off when getting to your destination, this probably isn't for you. On the other hand, a thief would have to hang out at the bike stand for awhile in order to make off with them. I have just left mine on when parking my bike, and so far, no one has messed with them. There are no mounting instructions with the bag, so you have to figure it out, but it is pretty simple. The bags can fold flat against the sides, and come with a reinforcement panel that you can set at the bottom to widen them out to their full size. This could be handy if you needed to empty the bags and narrow the profile of your bike for parking. I haven't left my bike out in a rainstorm with these on, but they have gotten damp and I expect that they will hold up well to rain.
Another reviewer expressed concern about the corners of the bags getting caught on the spokes of the back wheel and presenting a safety concern. I have not had this problem- there is ample clearance on my bike between the inside of the bags and the wheel, and they have not gotten in the way at all.
I also have a metal basket on the front of my bike, but I greatly prefer using the panniers. Loading the front basket makes steering difficult, but putting extra weight low over the back wheel doesn't seem to cause adverse effects.
These are a great size for toting some groceries or books for everyday errands. Those looking for panniers for long-distance biking won't want these as they are not as large as other items out there for substantial amounts of gear.
Overall, I love these bags and would recommend them to anyone who wants a small, cute, fun set of panniers for their bike.

About Thule
To say that Thule's beginnings in the U.S. were humble would be an understatement. SportRack - Abr512 - Kayak Saddle Review

First off, this comes with FOUR saddles as opposed to the picture, which only shows two. Like the other reviewer stated, the hardware is not perfect. The U-bolts take a little elbow grease to fit into their slots, but I did not have any problem with the screw-knobs threading. Each saddle screwed down tightly and securely to my 2002 Ford Escape factory cross bars (I was a little afraid because my bars are about 3-4 inches wide, but it was fine).

I used this to transport a large 13 foot tandem kayak. The included straps are just what you need: two straps with buckles to tie the kayak down to the roof rack, and bow and stern tie downs. I felt very comfortable taking it on the highway.

Overall, I would recommend this product to those looking to save some money compared to Yakima or Thule solutions. These mount great on factory crossbars, and you get everything you need for about half the price of name brand saddles. I did purchase the Thule water slide mat in additionThule 854 Water Slide Kayak Carrier Accessory Mat, and this setup works perfect for me.

Yakima FarOut Rooftop Cargo Bag Review

I just purchased this Yakima FarOut Cargo Bag. I will be using it for a 5,500 mile round trip coming up. I'll give my first impressions here, and later, by May 20th, I'll update how it has performed for the first 2,750 miles. I have a 2009 Toyota Camry with Yakima Rr Tracks, Yakima Landing Pad Base for Yakima Control Towers (1), and Yakima Control Tower - Set of 4s already installed. I also have a Yakima SkyBox 18 Rooftop Cargo Box on top but needed a little more space to put stuff in, (I have to carry around enough stuff for myself, my wife, and my newborn for the next 6 months). I am putting the Bag on the side of the SkyBox. My plan is to put everythingI will be using at the hotels inside of the Bag so that I can unstrap it from the racks and carry the whole Bag in every-time we stop, instead of having to carry a bunch of individual items in from the car for every temporary hotel stop. We'll see how the plan plays out. But as for now. Let me give you my first impressions and stay tuned for future updates on performance:

First Impressions:

The Bag quality seem great. It says it keeps rain and bugs out an I believe it. The material is heavy and of high quality. It has 2 different ways to hook it up to your bars, either sideways or longways, nice feature. I'm doing long ways so it fits next to my SkyBox. Inside is mostly just open space, there is a small compartment on one of the sides which is nice for small items you want to keep at easy reach. There looks to be a a lot of space inside. There is a hefty double zipper too close the top plus fold down flaps that folds down over the zipper. Velcro holds down this flap, and to top it all off, there are 4 adjustable straps that both help hold the flap down and will squish down the top if you don't get it all full.

So far, I am very impressed, I only wish it had some type of locking mechanism (it may, I need to look through the instructions). But I will see what I can do to get it locked onto my bars, plus a zipper lock.

Performance:

Update 3 July 2010:
Okay, didn't get back to finishing up this review as fast as I wanted to, but here it is.
So as you know I was initially impressed by the quality. Well that has not changed and I am so glad I bought this. I ended up being able to squeeze it nicely on the roof by my skybox. It actually turned out to be the most used item during the trip across the US. It has enough space to fit all the belongings my wife, child, and I need at a hotel. We stayed at 6 hotels during our journey and the the cargo bag became a life saver. Each time we arrived at a hotel, I'd get the wife and child to the room, then I'd come back out for the cargo bag. Unstrapping the cargo bag from the roof I then plop in onto a hotel dolly for transport and roll it into our room. I preferred using a dolly as the bag was around 100lbs. But I was surprised to find out that the bag actually had backpack straps for carrying, this was a big help at the few hotels without a dolly.
In the mornings we'd pack almost everything back into the cargo bag and I'd get it strapped up on top of the roof again. It really sped up our unloading and loading times because I didn't have to make 50 million trips to the car. That bag literally took care of 4-6 trips to the car.
It held up against all types of weather, and lots of bugs. I am truely impressed and satisfied with this purchase and highly recommend it. I do have to say that I would not recommend cramming it with 100lbs of stuff and plan to walk 5 miles with it. It's not that type of backpack, but it will let you get your stuff into a hotel if you don't have a dolly. I also have to say that there is no way my wife could have handled the weight of that bag. So for people in the not so buff category, pack it lighter if you plan to remove it from the roof of your vehicle. Also, do be careful about how much you do put in it. While I think the bag could easily handle 200+ pounds, most roofs can't do above 100lbs without bending. I could see our sun roof being pushed down when I loaded it, but nothing serious. All in all, great purchase, would purchase again, and again.

I use these for my commute to work each day, they're pretty handy and hold a decent amount.I pack a change of clothes, different shoes, lunch, an ipod, and a few other miscellaneous things without even utilizing their full capacity.The are easy to mount to any luggage rack on a mountain bike, simply clip it on and you go.My one complaint is that if I hit rough pavement too fast they have come off as the only have clips that sit on the edge of the rack and an elastic cord to hook onto the sides by the wheels.I've gotten around this by using plastic ties to ensure that if they come loose they won't detach from the bike.It would be nice if they fastened more securely, however.

I suspect a low price point was the main goal in the design of this product.It is very easy to mount, but also very easy for a thief to remove.That was addressed by adding some Torx screw to lock the mounting knobs, but these are tiny any a pain to install.They are not captive on the cradles, I am sure I would loose them after removing them, or misplace the tool to install them.The screws seem like an afterthought.The knobs that tighten the clamp around the roof rack are plastic, the screw threads through plastic, feels to me like the screw would strip out the plastic threads if over tightened.

The plastic is thin, the whole rack system seems flimsy.The "Hull Flex" technology that lets the rack compress to conform to the hull shape also compress to allow the hull to pivot over the car, even with bow and stern lines attached.My 45 lb, 16 foot wooden strip sea kayak would wiggle from side to side, even with the straps very tight.These might work better for a shorter boat.I am sending the system back for something more substantial.

If you want a small bag of some kind to clip to your rear rack the varity out there is endless. If you want anything larger, the options turn quite poor. I work in a city in Japan so it is safe for me to bike every day, and registering a car or motorcycle as a foreigner is miserable. It is rather strange that I am in one of the few decent sized Japanese cities that does not have a subway or train system. So alot of my travel to and from the office, and shopping, and running errands now-a-days happens on an electric bike I bought here in Japan (awesome by the way). Grocery shopping on a bike can be not so fun if you want to carry much home with you. I know I am in an odd situation, noone else will have my reasons for wanting a large set of panniers, but anyone who reads this will have their own unique reason for needing the space, and that is what we have in common.
As a guy who uses my panniers every day, I love this set. The side bags are only about 6" wide, 10" long, and 13" tall but they make the most of that space by not being so narrow that it's difficult to fit odd sized items in the bags. The next most important point about the side bags is that (although they can be folded flat if dissassembled) they are not shapeless bags without support. These bags have a full system of plastic inserts that support the bottom, top, and every side - as well as a wire reinforcing frame at the top. They are almost hard sided bags, almost. Because the top is enforced by a plastic sheet, it forms an extension of your bike rack so that you have a flat deck across the top of the bags that is roughly two square feet. I usually use my side bags without the rolling top bag and the appearance and funtion is still that of a complete stand alone product. When I do use the top bag I usually use it as a suitcase, I travel alot for work and sometimes bike to or from the office the same day that I cab to or from the airport. The rolling top bag is big on the inside but fits well in the overhead storage on a plane, it is just about the right size for two nights out of town. The rolling case gives up nothing in terms of quality or appearance to normal travel luggage. That is one thing that actually did suprise me about the Kettlers. As someone looking for a storage solution I had hopes of how the pannier set would perform. The fact that they lived up to my needs is a pleasant suprise. Beyond that though, the level of engineering and the amount of thought that obviously went into the design and constuction of the bags is heartening in this day and age. There is no doubt that these bags were definitely not made in china. I wish Kettler made more of the things I buy and use on a daily basis.

Arrived very timely. Not too difficult to put up by a single mom who doesn't like technical things but took me a bit to figure it out - would've helped having two people setting it up. Only problem I have is getting it closed, you have to slam it hard for it too catch. Did notice a little high pitch whining with racks loaded and lost about 3-4 mpg with it. It would be a pain to take off and on every ski trip so going to leave it on for duration of ski season. Axiom Monsoon Panniers Review

I've had these panniers for a month.So far, they are just fantastic.I don't know how the long-term durability of these bags will be, though they certainly seem well-made.It's the first set of panniers I've ever owned, and I wouldn't describe myself as a serious cyclist, more of a couple-day-a-week commuter.

I live in an extremely rainy place and I have used them for commuting to work.So far, the insides are absolutely rainproof, no matter how heavy the rain.Under the main flap is a cuffed top to the main compartment that you roll over itself and secure with a clicking clasp, kind of the way some diving bags work.The main flap then covers this rolled-up cuff and has a separate clicking clasp and belt to cinch it tight.It's hard to describe the cuff setup. but it works great.I love the bright color for visibility and reflective logo on the sides.I've read other reviews stating that the outside zipper eventually loses its waterproof properties from the abrasion of opening/closing the zipper over time, kind of an unavoidable result of how a zipper functions, so I've avoided using it for that reason.Under the main flap is a mesh compartment that would be good for storing anything that you don't mind getting wet.(My wet socks from my commute into work go in there when I ride home).By mounting these panniers as far back as possible, I haven't had any problems with my heels hitting the bags, which was a concern, and a reason I avoided the larger "typhoon" model which seems to be otherwise identical to these.

I've been pleased with how secure these are on the carrier, no movement that I can detect.There is a small rotating wedge-shaped plastic lock on the back of the bag between the hooks that helps keep it securely in place against the rack.

I would recommend these highly, and the price was an amazing value.

Axiom Gatherer Shopper Panniers Review

I got these panniers as an upgrade from the less-stylish, smaller ones I'd been using since July. While these panniers are made of sturdy material and are most definitely the size I was looking for, I've run into a few issues. First, each bag has a long, flexible plastic insert that you have to put in to stabilize them. If you don't have anything in the bag, the inserts fold in on themselves - so you have to prop them up again when you're ready to load something up.
Secondly, they come with velcro to secure the bottom back of the bag to the side of your rack, but the velcro is two separate pieces rather than one long one. I lost one side's velcro the very first day I used these.
Third, these are just almost too large. I have a 26" road bike. If I put even one sack of groceries in these, the larger sides, unstabilized, pooch out so that the magnetized snap has no chance of working. I have to fold the tops of the panniers into themselves to keep my stuff covered. Also, adding any weight to these makes them move around a lot more while you're biking. I've had to stop several times because the back corner of one has swung far enough around to get stuck in my spokes while I'm riding, resulting in a horrible noise. I'm worried they could break one of my spokes if they're heavy enough. I tried keeping them further up on the rack, but then I hit them with my feet while pedaling.
I'm switching back to my old, uglier, functional panniers. It's too bad, because these really are cute and the size was appealing...but the trouble isn't worth it.

The saddle concept alleviates any attachment concerns and makes them very simple to install and remove. Being all heavy fabric, they function sort of like a stuff sack. You can get a lot in them. For the money, they can't be beat if you don't have to have waterproof and don't need the space of larger individual panniers. These are about 1600 cu in and I've managed fine by using a stuff sack or two on the rack top for my sleeping pad and bag and extra clothes for winter touring. I also use a couple of matching but smaller bags on the front.

The only con is the buggie cord hooks designed to attach to the bottom of the rack. They're flimsy, or were 3 years ago, and didn't last long. No matter as you don't need them anyway. Just cut them off when you get the bags and save yourself the trouble.

I bought this rack becuase I wanted to be able to fit EVERYTHING on my roof.4 boards, skis, mountaineering ski's which and snowboards at the same time... and snowboards with big bindings that require a raised racked option so they fit.This rack does it all.Easy to use, pretty easy to install, and no major issues.

I have had minor issues with locking and unlocking when I load the rack full, one time the locks jammed for several minutes before a buddy and I were able to unjam the lock with a little extra elbow grease (this was because we clamped the rack down too tight I think).Great Rack overall!

I took a flier on this bag.I couldn't find any reviews on this or any similar bag, but it was one of the most attractive bags I had seen and at about $67 including shipping it was worth the risk.

FIRST IMPRESSION
Right out of the box it seemed substantial and well made.My one complaint would be that the backer board felt a little bendy.It came with a ton of inserts of different sizes to fine tune them for the exact gauge of your rack (nice).Also impressed with the Solen Locking System.It actually locks, with a key! Also there is no bungee with hook as a third point of contact.Instead there is a grove along the bottom of the bag that sits on a disc shaped attachment that remains on your rack.Comes with a strap.It is typical waterproof material with a standard roll seal and a flap over the top of it .There is another velcro flap on the back that covers the hooks when carrying with the strap.

SETUP
The inserts for the hooks allow the locking system to be effective.If you get the correct ones in the hooks the Solen system is surprisingly secure.The disc attaches to the rear stay of your rack.It won't work unless you have 11 inches between the rail that the top hooks sit on and the spot where the disc attaches to the support. The disc attachment is cumbersome.It needs room to attach around the stay and behind.If you are buying a rack too I would suggest one that has a third stay on the back.

PLACEMENT
It is really easy.you really just have to place the bag on the rack.It finds the disc at the bottom and clicks in nice and snug on top.No fumbling to attach a bungee hook at the bottom.It doesn't rely on friction or a stressed bungee to be secure it just fits.

Well done.I am buying another.

Sunlite Bicycle Monostay Adapter Review

The flat bracket that goes around the back of the monostay and attaches to the rack is made of such a soft metal that as I screwed the bolts into the horseshoe shaped piece it simply bent and could not be made completely tight. When I attach something to my bike I like to think that it's going to stay put and not wiggle around. I gave it two stars because it's probably okay for light loads.

Thule 724 Flat Top 4-Ski Rooftop Carrier Review

I found this product to be a good solution for what I needed it to do--Carry my families ski's up to the slopes. There's not a lot of noise from wind aerodynamic issues, even at high speeds. It holds the skis firmly in place, and has a very easy to use open button & close snap. Although it may not be made of metal, it's sturdy enough that nothing moves in it.

This was by far a better option that several other systems I found, which offered too many parts & not a whole lot of value for the price they wanted. The factory installed ski rack which would have cost $300 was roughly the same size and was not as good a deal as this rack for my 2000 Dodge Durango.

In response to the previous two reviews, I must note a few corrections.

Firstly, the rack DOES hold two snowboards, I tested it with two of my friends snowboards on my last trip. In order for them to fit, one must face down and the other face up, one on top of the other. The individual who posted that it does not obviously didn't think to try stacking them.

Second, In response to the fact that the bar could simply be twisted--you're joking right? It would attract attention if an individual attempted to twist off the bar. On top of that, in order for them to twist off the bar, they would have to break the board/skis in the rack in the process, and that would defeat the purpose, would it not?

The only problem I had with this was the FM1 adapter which was required to install this carrier on my factory bars. The instructions for assembly didn't provide any information for any vehicles besides imports. (Domestic cars are out of luck since this is a Sweden based company!)

Axiom Odyssee Disc Compatible Rear Rack Review

I received this rack yesterday. This morning it took about an hour to install. It is well made and sturdy. The rack is intended to fit bikes with rear disc brakes, so it is configured for a variety of set-ups. Because of this, you can't just pop it on the bike and tighten it up. It takes a few minutes and a few small adjustments to get it just right. I have to say, though, it was never frustrating attaching it. Once I decided how it would best fit my bike it was just a matter of few minutes of tightening and adjustment. Looks great. Seems as sturdy as other high quality racks I've used and seen. I recommend it if you have a bike with rear disc brakes. (I have a Jamis Coda Elite)

Yakima KingPin Bike Rack Review

We needed a way to haul three adult-sized bicycles from our home base to various cycling paths. So I visited a number of local stores to see what my options were. I settled on the Yakima BigHorn 4 as the best option for my budget, then discovered through some online searching that I could purchase the next model up, the Yakima KingPin 4 bike rack for a bit less than the BigHorn 4 would run me in a traditional retailer.

The KingPin 4 folds features a fold-down mast, a must convenience to allow access to a vehicle's rear hatch or door. Although I would not consider a bike rack without this feature, be forewarned: once you lower the rack while it's loaded with three bikes (more about the fourth bike claim follows), you will be hard pressed to single-handedly reposition it and slide in the lock or bolt. There is too much weight on that pivot point.

I soon learned, therefore, that it was easier to have the mast folded up, not down, when loading the bikes.

The dual bike arms are a must, allowing for more stability and easier loading and unloading. The bike arms fold down as well, though this option, while useful, is not essential in many cases. (These folding bike arms are the main difference between the KingPin and BigHorn racks.)

A series of bike cradles and rubber "chainstraps" stabilize and anchor the bikes. You can slide theses cradles along the tubular arms to allow sufficient room to avoid any rubbing or scraping if you are carrying three bikes. (I looked as some less expensive racks that required hand-tightening one or more big bolts to tighten clamps that held the bikes. That system seemed like a royal pain and huge annoyance.)

Despite the name and billing, I'm less confident in recommending the KingPin4 for transporting four bikes. I think it's possible, but would require great care to avoid scraping paint or entangling pedals and spokes. Plus, I prefer using four "chainstraps" per bike for a bit of insurance, so if you want to carry four bikes, I would recommend springing for another set of these.

The unloaded contraption weights about 32 pounds, so it's not too heavy as you carry it from the basement or garage to install it. But be careful of the arms or you might shatter the glass in a door or an outside light. Also, you need to do a bit of assembly out of the box, so allow a good 30 minutes to set up and test the rig before using it the first time. The drawings in the instructions did not seem to match what I was actually looking at when I had everything before me on the floor, so I spent an extra few minutes considering the options. This assembly is not difficult---it's just that adage "never do anything for the first time" may stump one for a bit.

I am using this rack with a two-inch hitch, and I purchased a locking pin to replace the bolt that is shipped for attaching the rack to the hitch. I also run one of the cable bike locks through the bike frames and around the spanner between the arms to add a measure of security.

During our first foray, a 100-mile trip each way, the bikes and rack swayed just a bit from time to time, but overall, the sway was not a problem. Having a hundred extra pounds jutting up behind the rear window will change any vehicle's handling and hamper visibility through the rearview mirror, so be prepared to change your driving style as needed.

To conclude, the KingPin 4 has performed well. We could load and unload three bikes in about five minutes, and neither the Durango or bikes were scratched during transport. But, again, I would suggest that this rack is great for three bikes, but may be a challenge for carrying four.

Thule KIT 4001 Podium Intracker Kit Review

These fit our 2007 Kia Rondo as expected, however, the cheap plastic locking pin doesn't do a very good job of keeping the plastic cover on each of these.I've still only been able to (barely) get 3 out of 4 of them on.I read another review elsewhere that recommended the locking pin as a better alternative, so I'm going to try those.I don't suspect it will add any real security because you can pop the plastic covers off easily with just a screwdriver, but hopefully it will hold them in place a bit better.

This bag is exactly what I was looking for. It has a lot of compartments and allows me to store water, food, etc while I am biking. Would recommend.

Very sturdy, easy to assemble if you are somewhat mechanically inclined. It took me about 15 minutes to install, and the baby is very well protected.
